Responsibilities
- Design earplugs and earplug components, or modify existing designs using established manufacturing processes such as injection molding, dip molding, etc.
- Integrate electronics and biometric sensors into earplugs
- Perform measurements of earplug performance using test fixtures, microphones, and various sound and vibration sources
- Perform measurements of electronic components and assemblies, including microphones, accelerometers, and other sensors
- Design tests and experiments to analyze acoustic properties of fluids, polymers, and existing earplug designs and assemblies
- Document designs and measurement and analysis procedures and write up results
- Make earplug parts and assemble them into working earplugs
- Maintain laboratory, repair damaged equipment or facilities, and debug any sources of noise in acoustic and electrical measurements
Requirements
- Currently enrolled as a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- Expertise with CAD/CAE programs, electrical circuit design, or embedded software programming
- Laboratory experience taking measurements with electronics and transducers, especially microphones, and eliminating sources of noise in measurements
- Understanding of signals and systems as they apply to acoustics and human hearing, and electronics
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work with a team as well as independently
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with Autodesk Fusion 360, LabVIEW, and/or MATLAB
- Experience with C++ or Python for programming Raspberry Pi or Arduino
- Interest in audio, audiology, hearing protection, and/or hearing augmentation
